Introduction Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 More to come... Please add the factorbothering sub-reddit to your frontpage. |
Factor botheringThis page is a stream of consciousness about me thinking and fiddling with factors. It always strikes me that something as simple as the factors of an integer seem to be a great enigma in mathematics, particularly those numbers that don’t have any factors; the primes. One thing I am keeping in mind with this little project is that many people have only studied prime numbers in isolation, they haven't considered all the data available to them. So I will be exploring the world of primes while also considering the factorizable integers. A little about me first: I consider myself an amateur mathematician, I do have a post graduate diploma in statistics but all that has achieved is to make me know how much more I DON’T know! So this little excercise is to see if I can get my head around why it's such an enigma, it most certainly is not any attempt to solve it! We shall start in part 1 (menu on the left) by looking at what factors are. Please be aware that I start off using the term "factor" and then change to use the term "divisor". By the way, this site will look pants in Internet Explorer, why are you using it anyway!? I've created a sub-reddit on reddit.com for comments and updates about factor bothering as I am lazy and didn't want to set up commenting on my site, not to mention having everyone create accounts just to comment! |
